Bulletproof One stays unbeaten in CTBA

DEL MAR, Calif. — Bulletproof One remained unbeaten after three starts with a convincing win in her Southern California debut in Wednesday’s $100,702 California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Stakes for 2-year-old statebred fillies at Del Mar.

Ridden confidently by Norberto Arroyo Jr., Bulletproof One ($3) led throughout and won by 6 1/4 lengths over 15-1 Unchain Her Heart. Bulletproof One ran 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.70. Wise Rachel (41-1) rallied to finish third in the field of eight.

Bulletproof One had her first start on Wednesday for owners Gary Barber, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Adam Wachtel, and trainer Peter Miller. The partnership acquired the filly privately in mid-July after Bulletproof One won the Everett Nevin Stakes for California-breds by 9 1/4 lengths at Pleasanton on July 6 for previous owner and trainer Ellen Jackson.

“She’s been very straightforward,” Miller said. “We’ve only had her for two weeks. She came to me in great shape.”

Miller said in the winner’s circle that Bulletproof One could start in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante at seven furlongs on Aug. 31, but that the $100,000 Generous Portion Stakes for statebred 2-year-old fillies at six furlongs on Aug. 28 is a viable option.

“We’ll consider it,” Miller said of the $300,000 Del Mar Debutante. “The question is whether she wants to go seven-eighths against that quality.”

By Idiot Proof, Bulletproof One began her career with an eight-length win in a maiden race against open company, and males, at Golden Gate Fields on May 11. The CTBA Stakes was her first start against fillies. Bulletproof One has earned $137,400 in her three wins.
