Journalism to Coolmore America Upon Retirement

The Coolmore partners, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, have reached an agreement to stand leading Kentucky Derby contender Journalism at Ashford Stud upon his retirement and to participate with the current ownership during his racing career.

Journalism has dominated the Derby prep season with multiple Grade 2 victories, solidifying his position at the top of the Derby Futures market. Trained by Michael McCarthy for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Bridlewood Farm, Don Alberto Stable, Robert LaPenta and Elayne Stables 5 LLC, Journalism concluded his juvenile season with an impressive victory in the Los Alamitos Futurity (Gr.2). He made his three-year-old debut on March 1, 2025, in the Grade 2 DK Horse San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita displaying a powerful closing surge to overtake the 2-5 favorite, Barnes, winning by 1¾ lengths.

The son of Curlin is the first foal out of the multiple Grade 1 performer Mopotism (Uncle Mo) and was bred in Kentucky by Don Alberto Corporation. Mopotism secured 3 wins including the La Canada Stakes (Gr.2) at Santa Anita, while also placing in four Grade 1’s – the Ogden Phipps, Starlet, La Brea and Santa Margarita Stakes, amassing total earnings of $876,090. Journalism was sold at Fasig-Tipton’s 2023 August Sale for $825,000 to Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners out of the Denali Stud consignment.

“We are delighted to be joining Eclipse, Bridlewood Farm, Don Alberto Stable, Elayne Stables 5 LLC & Robert LaPenta in Journalism’s future. He’s a very exciting prospect, very good looking colt with an impeccable pedigree, we look forward to a big career with him.” M V Magnier
