Hip 2490 Analysis

CONFORMATION

Plisky is a bay bombshell.  At this stage of Eclipse’s existence, we have been fortunate enough to acquire progeny of just about every Blue Chip stallion there is.  Most have failed to live up to expectations, but many soar.  When we inspected Plisky for the 1st time, she eerily reminded us of another smashing daughter of Practical Joke we bought as a yearling and broke her Maiden on debut at Saratoga and placed in the Grade 1 Spinaway: Kaling—even her coloring and reddish tones through her tail are Kaling-esque!

But, it was the manner in which Plisky motored when in motion, utilizing the strength in her shoulder muscles and the thrust she exuded with her hind quarters, particularly her powerful gaskin, which won us over.

Balance, balance and more balance is what Plisky is all about, which is a hard trait to find when dealing with such an imposing specimen.

As much force as Plisky exhibited in her physical appearance, her mind matched, as she was all business, all the time.  Plisky gives the impression she’d run through a brick wall if asked to.  And—the wall would lose that battle!

With well-conformed front limbs and a J-Lo like caboose, Plisky looks like she’ll be fast, fast, fast with the ability to carry.

If you want to see a filly who walks with a purpose, look no further than Plisky.  She is on a mission!

SEAN TUGEL’S EXPERT PEDIGREE ANALYSIS

Practical Joke would be the runaway leader of his stallion crop if he hadn’t entered stud the same year as Gun Runner. He has become a proven sire of stakes winners over varying distances and multiple surfaces. The son of Into Mischief currently has elite fillies on the track, including Ways and Means this season’s winner of the Ballerina Gr. 1 at Saratoga as well as the Grade 3 winner and Grade 1 placed Simply Joking to complement his earlier successes that include Grade 1 winning juvenile Chocolate Gelato.

South American blood doesn’t have the same influence it once did with imports such as Paseana in years past, but it certainly has been a breed changer through Candy Ride most notably over the past two decades. Practical Joke himself shuttled to Chile for many seasons to breed mares and was very successful before Coolmore stopped that process due to his Northern Hemisphere success. One particular filly who recently imported and made an impact was the daughter of Practical Joke, Richi (Chi) who won multiple graded stakes in California. This family is one of the strongest Peruvian families anchored by Plisky’s fourth dam: the 2x Peruvian Broodmare of the Year, Florida-bred, and US Grade 3 placed Proud Emilia.

Her 3rd dam was also a talented runner winning a Grade 3 and placing in a Grade 1 while compiling 13 wins. She was a full sibling to champion miler Domingo in their native land and her daughter has been a substantial producer in the United States. Thundering Emilia, the Graded Stakes winning daughter of Thunder Gulch has produced Helium who won the Tampa Bay Derby Gr. 2 and Mighty Scarlett, who was Grade 3 placed at Belmont Park. Her 1st dam was a champion runner in her own right winning 11 races during her career. She has since become another producer from a long line of them in her family. Amongst her 5 winners are the American Grade 2 placed Le Dom Bro as well as One Hundred Kings who was black-type placed at Gulfstream Park.

TRAINER & THE PLAN

Graham Motion is well on his way to earning himself a spot in the Hall of Fame.

Motion is most famous for being the conditioner of Animal Kingdom, who won the 2011 Kentucky Derby while Eclipse President, Aron Wellman, was the Vice President of the colt’s ownership company, Team Valor.

Motion and Wellman developed a phenomenal rapport while Motion trained privately for Team Valor and it was only a matter of time before Motion became one of Eclipse’s go-to trainers.

Motion has delivered the goods for the baby blue and black, saddling numerous Stakes and Graded winners for the stable, highlighted by the All-World filly, Sharing, who captured multiple major races for Eclipse, including the 2019 renewal of the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Eclipse and Motion also combined to win the Grade 1, $400,000 Hollywood Derby with Speaking Scout, Graded winner Blame Debbie, multiple Stakes-heroine, Sister Otoole, among numerous others like dual Oaks heroine this season, Fondly.  This year, Graham has developed Roja into one of the best turf sprinters in the country.  In fact, she is on course to take on colts in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.  He has also won multiple Graded events in 2026 with Warming and it appears that Controlling, a 2 year-old filly, is destined for major things after winning a MSW by daylight last month.

In addition to Sharing, Graham trained Shared Account and Main Sequence to victories in Breeders’ Cup Championship events.

Off the track and away from the barn, Graham is a family man to the core, doting over his wife Anita and his children, Jane and Chappy.

Sharing

Graham and Anita are also incredibly philanthropic in and out of the industry, devoting the bulk of their charitable attention towards retired racehorse aftercare organizations, including Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, Thoroughbred Charities of America, National Museum of Racing, Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation and The Retired Racehorse Project.

Graham is based year-round at the most magnificent training center in the United States at Fair Hill in Elkton, Maryland where a variety of track surfaces available, including dirt, turf and synthetic and there are vast amenities at his fingertips, while any number of Mid-Atlantic and East Coast tracks are easily accessible.

IMPORTANT BONUS DEPRECIATION TAX INFORMATION

After completing our due diligence, we have elected to claim 100% bonus depreciation on all qualifying yearling purchases made at the Keeneland September Sale. We have traditionally not elected bonus depreciation for several reasons, but due to recent changes in other areas of the tax code, I now believe this is the most beneficial depreciation method for each yearling partnership. This treatment allows the partnerships to deduct the full eligible cost of these horses immediately, rather than spreading the deduction over several years, thereby maximizing current-year tax deductions and allowing our partners to take advantage of this tax benefit for their investment in the horse. Each partner will receive their proportionate share of the resulting tax activity; however, the ability to use any deduction may depend on the partner’s individual basis, at-risk, passive-activity, and other tax circumstances, so as always, I encourage each partner to consult their tax professional about their individual tax situation.
