Built Back To His Best At Churchill, Earns 100 Beyer
Published by Joel Cunningham on May 21, 2026 • Eclipse NewsThree weeks ago, there were more questions than answers after Built failed to fire his best shot in the St. Matthews Stakes on Thurby at Churchill Downs.
On May 21 beneath the Twin Spires, however, the talented son of Hard Spun emphatically reminded everyone exactly what he is capable of.
Making a quick turnaround in a loaded $148,000 Allowance event, Built delivered one of the meet’s most visually impressive performances, flexing on the competition to score a dominant 4 3/4-length victory while earning a gaudy 100 Beyer Speed Figure.
Covering seven furlongs in 1:22.54, Built stalked the early pace with confidence under a beautifully measured ride from Irad Ortiz Jr., who allowed Built to settle into rhythm before giving him his cue approaching the 3/16 pole. The response was immediate.
Built instantly separated himself from the field with a powerful closing punch rarely seen on dirt, widening his advantage with every stride against a field packed with stakes-quality rivals.
It was the kind of electric performance that once again highlighted both the colt’s immense talent and versatility.
Trained by Wayne Catalano, Built has now established himself as one of the more intriguing older horses in the Eclipse stable. Like his paternal half-brother Aloha West, Built possesses an explosive late kick that continues to hint turf could eventually remain an option down the road as well.
The victory pushed Built’s career earnings to $425,146 while adding another major result to an already productive 2026 campaign for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners.
Most importantly, the effort served as a reminder that when Built is allowed to settle, travel comfortably, and produce his run on his own terms, he is capable of making even quality competition look ordinary.
Now, assuming he exits the race in good order, bigger opportunities at the stakes—and perhaps graded stakes—level likely await this summer.
