Meaning A Game Runner-Up in Kentucky Oaks (G1)
Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners’ Meaning delivered a courageous, high-class performance to finish a valiant runner-up in the $1.5 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) on May 1 at Churchill Downs.
Breaking sharply from post 5, the daughter of Gun Runner secured a good inside position in the second flight behind early leader Explora. The pace was an honest one, as the field moved down the backside through a half-mile in 46 4/5 seconds.
Approaching the far turn—and with anticipation building from the large Oaks Day crowd—jockey Juan Hernandez had a handful of horse beneath him, patiently waiting for the right opportunity. When it came, Meaning responded.
Angling into the stretch, Meaning loomed boldly to the leader and surged to the front, taking command of the Kentucky Oaks and carrying her advantage deep into the long Churchill Downs stretch.
But another star filly by Gun Runner, undefeated and closing strongly down the center of the track, ranged up in the final strides. After a ferocious stretch battle, Meaning was overtaken late, finishing second in a performance defined by both determination and class.
Meaning fought. She showed her true mettle.
“I had a really good trip,” said Hernandez. “She broke really well and got in a good position. Around the turn, I swung out because the horse in front of me was kind of stopping. When I asked her, she exploded. I thought we had it for a second, the other filly was just a little faster than we were today. She’s going to improve from this race.”
It was a result that carried a familiar emotional swing—so close to the pinnacle, yet just out of reach—echoing the fine margins that define the sport at its highest level.
“Once again on this stage, we’re gutted—but proud, and most of all appreciative,” said Eclipse Founder & President Aron Wellman. “Proud of Meaning, our partners, and the entire team. She showed the world exactly the kind of filly we always believed she was.”
Trainer Michael McCarthy echoed that pride: “I thought she would show up and she did. I am happy with her race.”
The effort marked another top performance for Eclipse in the Kentucky Oaks, following a runner-up finish with Nest in 2022 and a third-place finish with Speech in 2020—further underscoring the strength and consistency of the stable’s #EclipseFillies program on the sport’s biggest stage.
For Meaning, the performance solidifies her place among the elite of her division and sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting remainder of her 3-year-old season. Wellman confirmed Saturday morning that the filly came out of the race well and her immediate plans are yet to be determined.
