Four Eclipse Runners Target $4.15 Million in Weekend Graded Stakes
Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners will be well represented on racing’s biggest stage this weekend, with four runners targeting graded stakes races worth a combined $4.15 million across Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby days.
The spotlight begins Friday at Churchill Downs, where Meaning will take her shot in the $1.5 million Kentucky Oaks (G1). The 3-year-old daughter of Gun Runner has drawn post 5 in a full field of 14 and has been installed as the 5-1 second choice on the morning line under Juan Hernandez. Trained by Michael McCarthy, Meaning has acclimated well since arriving in Louisville and has trained forwardly over the Churchill surface, including multiple under-the-lights schooling sessions. She enters the Oaks in top form as Eclipse looks to secure its first victory in the prestigious race.
Saturday brings two more major opportunities in seven-figure events at Churchill Downs.
Corruption will line up in the $1.5 million Turf Classic (G1), run one race prior to the Kentucky Derby. The front-running son of Medaglia d’Oro enters in career form following a narrow defeat in the Pan American Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park and has drawn the rail in a field of 10. With Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez aboard, Corruption is expected to put his speed into play early in the 1 1/8-mile contest.
Earlier on the card, Classic Q will contest the $1 million Churchill Distaff Turf Mile (G2). Trained by Mark Casse, the 4-year-old gray exits a strong runner-up effort in the Honey Fox Stakes (G3) and returns fresh for this assignment. Also to be ridden by Velazquez, Classic Q brings a consistent record at the distance, with three wins and two seconds from seven starts at one mile. She has trained well locally and appears ready to rise to the challenge.
Rounding out the weekend, Abaan will headline the action over the jumps as the 2-1 morning-line favorite in Saturday’s $150,000 Commonwealth Cup (G1) at Great Meadow in Virginia. The 2 1/8-mile steeplechase is one of the region’s premier events and provides Eclipse with an opportunity to compete at the highest level across disciplines.
With runners positioned in marquee races throughout the weekend, Eclipse enters Oaks and Derby days with multiple opportunities to make an impact under some of the brightest lights the sport has to offer.
